Hatsune Miku, codenamed CV01, is considered the most popular and well known VOCALOID, and the first to become a pop idol. The name of the character comes from merging the Japanese words for first (hatsun), sound (ne), and future (miku), thus meaning the first sound of the future, referring to her position as the first member of Crypton's "Character Vocal Series."
Kagamine Rin & Len (鏡音リン・レン), codenamed CV02, are Japanese VOCALOIDs developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and were initially released in December 2007 for the VOCALOID2 engine. They are the second set of vocals for Crypton's Character Vocal Series and are both Character Voice VOCALOIDs. Their codename "CV02" means "Character Voice 02".
The development of the Kagamines began when Crypton formulated the concept of making a pair of female and male voicebanks. The first idea was for two voices of a girl and an identical male of the opposite gender, just like twins.
Crypton originally had the intention of distributing them as twins, but this was not adopted. Crypton stated that they approved of the many different interpretations of Rin and Len's relationship that they saw in different works. Crypton's final announcement was that the Kagamines were neither siblings nor lovers. During their Append's production, Wataru Sasaki (aka. Wat) described them as two bodies with one soul. Wat also said that the Append boxart makes the pair seem like twins, due to the foetal position they were in.
KAITO (カイト) is a Japanese VOCALOID developed originally by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc.. He was one of the 4 known "Project Daisy" vocals. His VOCALOID3 update was developed and distributed by Crypton. He was initially released in February 2006 for the first VOCALOID engine.
Megurine Luka (巡音ルカ), codenamed CV03, is a Japanese VOCALOID developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc., and was initially released in January 2009 for the VOCALOID2 engine. She is the third release of Crypton's Character Vocal Series and is a Character Voice VOCALOID. Her codename of "CV03" means "Character Voice 03".
Megurine Luka was the first VOCALOID designed to fully support producing vocals in both Japanese and English, and the first addition to the Character Vocal Series software line characterized as an adult.
Her surname combines "Meguri" (巡, circulate or around) and "Ne" (音, sound), while the name "Luka" invokes the homophonous pronunciations of 流 (ru, flow), 歌 (ka, song) and 香 (ka, scent), thus making: "songs to all around the world as scent spreads."
Her name is based on her concept, which is "travelling sound", meaning words which are translated from one language to another.
MEIKO (メイコ) is a Japanese VOCALOID originally developed by Yamaha Corporation and distributed by Crypton Future Media, Inc.. She was one of the 4 known "Project Daisy" vocals. Her VOCALOID3 update was developed and distributed by Crypton Future Media. "MEIKO" comes directly from her voice provider's name, "Meiko Haigō" .
