On the very first bite, a Devil Fruit will bestow a superpower or a special superhuman trait that stays with the eater for life; no method of withdrawing these powers is known, save for death. The effect occurs immediately after the eater swallows, without needing conventional digestion (though the eater may need time to discover what the powers actually are). Afterwards, the fruit itself becomes powerless.

All Devil Fruits are categorized into three basic types based on the nature of the powers they grant, namely: Paramecia, Zoan, and Logia.

Paramecia, the most common Devil Fruit type, encompasses fruits that grant any one of a wide variety of "superhuman" abilities. By far the broadest Devil Fruit class, the one unifying characteristic of Paramecia fruits is that they are anything other than the ability to transform into animals or into elements of nature.

Zoan-type Devil Fruits grant the power to transform into a specific animal, in addition to a hybrid form combining the user's own species (most frequently human) with the aforesaid animal's. Unlike other Devil Fruits, Zoan fruits are said to carry a will of their own. A recently discovered science allows Zoan Fruits to be integrated into inanimate objects, bringing the object to life and granting it the standard Zoan transformations.

Logia, the rarest and most powerful of the three basic Devil Fruit types, refers to fruits that grant the power to create, control, and transform one's body into an element of nature, e.g.: fire, lightning, ice, sand, mud, magma, smoke, soot, snow, gas, plants, light, and darkness.

The Gomu Gomu no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants the user's body the properties of rubber, effectively making them a Rubber Human.

The Hana Hana no Mi is a pink flower shaped fruit with a stem sprouting out of the top, with swirls that go in a curly "S" like-pattern on the petals. The Hana Hana no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to replicate and sprout pieces of their body from the surface of any object or living thing.

The Hito Hito no Mi is a mushroom-shaped fruit with a stem sprouting out of the top, with swirls that go in a curly "S" like-pattern. It has a red top and a whitish stalk. The Hito Hito no Mi is a Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allows its user to transform into a human hybrid or a human at will.

The Mera Mera no Mi is a round orange fruit, composed of many flame-shaped components with swirl patterns on each one, and has a swirled stem on the top. The Mera Mera no Mi is a Logia-type Devil Fruit that allows the user to create, control, and transform into fire at will.

The Ope Ope no Mi is a red, heart-shaped fruit resembling a strawberry, small enough for a man to hold it in-between his fingers. It has a stem with a swirling end pointing upwards, and, as characteristic of natural Devil Fruits, its surface is swirl-patterned. The Ope Ope no Mi is a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that grants the power to create a spherical domain, inside of which the user can freely rearrange, take apart (without harm), and "surgically" remodel anything and anyone, including themself, making the user a Free Modification Human.
